Teachers require vetting for initial registration, renewal of registration (re-vetting) and employment purposes.
Teachers applying for registration must be vetted through the Teaching Council as they are required to provide documentary and other evidence to enable the Council to satisfy itself that a person is a fit and proper person to be admitted to the register as set out in Section 31(5)(b) of the Teaching Council Acts 2001 to 2012 and Section 10(1)(b) of the Teaching Council [Registration] Regulations 2016 and Teaching Council [Registration] (Amendments) Regulations 2016.
Renewal of Registration (Re-vetting)
The Teaching Council is commencing the re-vetting of all registered teachers on a three year cycle. This will ensure that all teachers will hold recent vetting should the Minister for Justice and Equality announce a cycle for re-vetting for all persons working with children or vulnerable persons.
The requirements for re-vetting are set out in
Section 33 (5)(a) of the Teaching Council Acts 2001 to 2015 and
Regulation 4 (SI557) of the Teaching Council (Registration) (Amendment) Regulations 2016.
Registered teachers can check their vetting status by logging on to the My Registration section.

- The Council may having regard to the information contained in the disclosure of a registered teacher, who has requested vetting for employment purposes, assess and consider that information under Part 5 of the Teaching Council Acts 2001 to 2012.
