Once your programme provider has transferred your final results to the Teaching Council, you will receive an invitation by email to submit your NQT application. The timing of this email will depend on when your programme provider transfers your results, but for the majority of NQTs you can expect an invitation email by mid-July. 

All applicants must provide evidence of linguistic competence in the language. This can be demonstrated by providing evidence of: 

a) achieving a minimum level of B2.2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages from the higher education institution where the qualification was completed. 

or 

b) Alternatively, applicants can provide certification of achieving a minimum level B2.2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages from an independent language competency test provider.

Applicants should provide verifiable evidence of an immersive educational experience in the curricular language of a minimum of four weeks duration. This may be accessed in two blocks, each of which must be at least two weeks. At least one of these blocks must be in a setting where the language is the vernacular language of the region/country.  

The immersive educational experience(s) must be one of the following: 

  • attending a language course 
  • working as a staff member in an educational setting  
  • conducting an action research project which is of relevance to your teaching studies  
  • engaging in School Placement.

If you are completing repeat exams and going through Autumn Exam Boards, you will not be able to avail of the NQT fast-track registration process. On receipt of your results, you can apply via the standard registration process by completing the REG-01 online application form on your My Registration portal on www.teachingcouncil.ie.

If you have not provided consent for your details to be transferred to us, you will not be able to avail of the NQT fast-track registration process. You will need to apply for registration via the online REG-01 form on your My Registration portal on www.teachingcouncil.ie.

Yes. You should apply to renew your registration via your My Registration account. 

If you do not renew your registration, you will be removed from the register and will need to pay the €90 initial registration fee when you apply to return to the register.   

Once removed you will not receive a salary from the Department of Education or Education Training Boards. 

If you have provided your course provider with consent for your final results to be transferred to the Teaching Council, you should receive an invitation by email to submit your NQT application by early July.   

All online NQT applications must be submitted by 30 September 2025. If you wish to register with the Council after September, you can apply via the standard registration process by completing the REG-01 online application form.   

The NQT application process can take up to 4 weeks from the date we receive all the required documentation. Once your application has been finalised, you will receive an email informing you that you are registered. 

If you gave consent to your college, you will have received an invitation from the Teaching Council to submit an online NQT fast-track application to update your registration to the route which you have just qualified in. Please see the email invitation for a link to the online form.
