What is registration with condition?
You will be granted registration with conditions if your application has not fulfilled all registration requirements.
This section explains:
- What the condition(s) is/are
- What you need to do to meet them
- The time-frame within which they must be met.
The condition(s) are recorded on the Register and on your Conditional Registration letter.
If you do not meet all the conditions within the timeframe and you are not granted an extension, your registration will lapse.
Post-qualification professional practice conditions
Droichead
Droichead is the induction process for newly qualified teachers (NQTs) and teachers who have not previously completed the required period of professional practice.
Application for an extension to a period of conditional registration
If you are unable to complete the requirements of a registration condition within the timeframe, you may apply to the Council for an extension.
History & Structure Examination (H&S)
As a post-primary teacher who has completed their teacher education outside of the Republic of Ireland, you are required to gain knowledge of the history and structure of the Irish education system before you can fully register.
Granting full registration to teachers on probation in a restricted setting
If you are a teacher on probation in a restricted setting, you may be eligible to apply for full registration in that sector subject to certain criteria.
The Induction Workshop Programme (primary and post-primary)
You must complete the Induction Workshop Programme if you completed: Droichead before 01 September 2013 (The Droichead pilot), or The traditional processes of Probation or PQE but have the Induction Workshop Programme condition outstanding.
Completing your probation
From September 2020, Droichead is the only route of induction for all primary NQTs. The traditional process of probation is no longer available.
Post-qualification employment (PQE)
If you are a post-primary teacher registered before 1 June 2020, post-qualification employment (PQE) may be an option in limited circumstances.
Irish language requirement (ILR)
As a primary teacher who has completed a programme of teacher education outside the Republic of Ireland, an Irish Language Requirement (ILR) condition normally applies to your registration.
Qualification Shortfalls (QS)
If you are fully qualified as a teacher outside of the Republic of Ireland but fall short of the required qualifications for registration in the Republic of Ireland, you may be registered on condition that you correct the shortfall within a specified period.
Overseas Induction
If you completed a formal state recognised induction process in another country, you must apply to the Teaching Council for the assessment of that process to check if it is recognised in the Republic of Ireland.
